Once known as Pleasant Island, Naura is the smallest republic globally and the third smallest country (behind Vatican City and Monaco); it measures 21 square-kilometers (8.1 sq. miles). Its population of just over 10,000 people is rarely added to by visitors; it is estimated only 200 tourists make it to the country each year.
Naura has the smallest GDP in the world. Still, for a brief period in the 1960s, it actually had the highest per capita GDP in the world, thanks to an abundance of phosphate reserves that were mined.
One area where it isn't lagging behind is in the obesity stakes; it is the world's fattest country!
