Roulette is simple to learn and easy to play in short sessions, which makes it one of the most played table games on phones. This guide takes you from your first bet to the end of a spin, then covers the special rules and betting systems you will see, and what they really do.
How mobile roulette works
The aim is the same on a phone as in a real casino: guess the winning number or group of numbers. The wheel has numbered pockets from 0 to 36; some versions, such as American roulette, add a 00 pocket. You can bet on a single number, a range of numbers, a colour, or odd or even.
Step 1: place your bets
Tap a chip value, then tap the table where you want to bet. Bets fall into two groups.
Inside bets
Chips on specific numbers or small groups of numbers.
| Bet | Covers | Pays |
|---|---|---|
| Straight | 1 number | 35:1 |
| Split | 2 neighbouring numbers (chips on the line between them) | 17:1 |
| Street | A row of 3 numbers (chips on the edge of the row) | 11:1 |
| Corner | 4 numbers (chips where they meet) | 8:1 |
| Line | 2 rows, 6 numbers (chips where the rows meet) | 5:1 |
Outside bets
Bets on broad features of the winning number. They win more often and pay less.
| Bet | Covers | Pays |
|---|---|---|
| Red/black | The colour of the pocket | 1:1 |
| Odd/even | Whether the number is odd or even | 1:1 |
| High/low | 19 to 36 or 1 to 18 | 1:1 |
| Dozen | 1 to 12, 13 to 24 or 25 to 36 | 2:1 |
| Column | One of the three vertical columns | 2:1 |
Zero is not red or black, odd or even, high or low, which is where the house edge on outside bets comes from. You can place several bets on one spin. On a small screen, zoom in or use the racetrack view, if the game has one, to avoid placing chips on the wrong spot.
Step 2: spin the wheel
A digital roulette game does not use a physical ball. When you press Spin, a random number generator picks the winning pocket and the animation shows the wheel landing there. Live roulette is different: a real dealer spins a real wheel on a video stream, which uses more data and takes longer per round.
Step 3: wait for the result
The animation of the ball slowing down is there for suspense; the result is already set when the spin starts. The game's software provider builds the animation, and an independent lab tests the random number generator at licensed casinos.
Step 4: payouts and winnings
Winning bets are paid at the rates in the tables above, and losing chips are cleared. Inside bets pay more because they cover fewer numbers; outside bets pay less because they cover more. Payouts can differ slightly between variants, so check the game's help screen. On a single-zero wheel every standard bet carries the same house edge of 2.7%; on a double-zero wheel most carry 5.26%. Knowing the payout for each bet helps you plan a strategy and manage your stakes.
Special rules and features
French roulette has two rules for even-money bets such as red or black, odd or even:
- La Partage: if the ball lands on zero, you get half your stake back. This cuts the edge on those bets to 1.35%.
- En Prison: if the ball lands on zero, your stake stays "in prison" for the next spin. Win that spin and you get your stake back.
Mobile roulette games also let you change settings, table themes and views, and most casinos carry several variants. Options differ by casino and app.
Betting systems and what they do
No system changes roulette's house edge. Systems change how your stakes move, which changes how a session feels and how fast a losing run hurts. Many players combine them, for example switching between flat outside bets and a progression. Here is how the common ones work.
Martingale
Double your bet after each loss and return to your base bet after a win. One win recovers the losses plus one unit. The catch is the losing run: ten losses in a row on even-money bets turn a $1 base bet into a $1,024 bet, and the table limit or your budget usually ends the run first. Use it with great care, if at all.
Fibonacci
Follow the sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, where each number is the sum of the two before it. Move one step up after a loss and two steps back after a win. Stakes rise more slowly than in the Martingale, but a long losing run still adds up.
D'Alembert
Add one unit after a loss and take one away after a win. It is the gentlest of the three and keeps your stakes in a narrow range. It rests on the idea that wins and losses even out, which they do not: each spin is independent, so the odds do not rise after a loss.
Patterns and past results
The wheel has no memory. A number that has not come up for 50 spins has the same chance on the next spin as any other. Result boards show what happened, not what will happen.
Emotional control and discipline
Set betting limits before you play, stick to your plan and do not chase losses, however good a winning run felt. Accept that you will lose some spins, which keeps you calm and stops hasty decisions. Know when to stop and keep a win instead of risking it again.
Practice and patience
Learn the rules first, then get a feel for the pace and features of the game. Many mobile casinos offer free roulette games where you can try bets and systems without risking money. Think long term rather than chasing quick wins, and remember that the point is to have fun. When you are ready, our ranking of mobile casinos helps you choose where to play.
