Each player is dealt two face down cards (referred to as ‘hole’ cards) and then five community cards (which are shared with other players) are dealt on the table. This 7-card setup allows players to make the best 5-card combination with their hole cards and the community cards.
Players take turns to make the ‘blind’ bets –the small and the big blind. The player to the left of the dealer places the small blind, followed by the one to the left of the small blind placing the big blind. The game starts with the player to the left of the big blind and follows a clockwise rotation.
Once the blinds have been posted, each player is dealt 2 hole cards and a round of betting follows. After the first betting round, 3 community cards (‘the flop’) are dealt in the center of the table and another round of betting follows. Then, a fourth card is dealt (‘the turn’) followed by another round of betting. Finally, the fifth card is dealt (‘the river’) and the final round of betting follows. After betting is completed, the player who made the highest 5-card combination using the 5 community cards and their 2 hole cards wins the pot.
