Landlocked Malawi is dominated by Lake Malawi, which is the fifth-largest freshwater lake in the world and takes up about a third of the country's 118,484 square-kilometers (45,747 sq. miles) area.
Malawi is a geographically diverse country with spectacular highlands, rolling grasslands, and, of course, extensive lakes. The majority of Malawi's 19 million population reside in rural locations. Only three towns, the capital Lilongwe, Blantyre, and Mzuzu, have a population of over 100,000.
While Malawi is actually one of the world's least developed countries, the Malawian government has put several programs in place to address the issue, and key indicators in recent years have shown progress is being made.
