Mahjong is a classic 4-player tile game initially from China which has been gaining more and more popularity in Malaysia. In Mahjong, a set of 144 tiles are shuffled together and players draw tiles in attempts to complete a winning hand. Before playing, players must agree on which variant of Mahjong they will be playing. Commonly in Malaysia, the two most popular variants are Chinese Classical Mahjong and Hong Kong Mahjong.
In Chinese Classical Mahjong, each player is dealt 13 tiles at the start and the game is played in four rounds. The aim of the game is to be the first player to discard all of the tiles in their hand to form a winning combination. The game is over when a player has reached the necessary point limit.
Hong Kong Mahjong is different in that the game starts with 16 tiles and features a two-step process in forming a winning combination. In the first step, a player needs to form a valid set of 4 tiles, and throw 1 away, and in the second step, a player needs to form another valid set of 4 tiles and discard the final one.
