Mahjong is a hugely popular game throughout Asia and is also gaining popularity in Cyprus. The game is played with tiles and the goal is to make four sets and a pair. The four sets consist of three tiles of the same suit in sequence (e.g. 1-2-3 of bamboos) and the pair needs to consist of two identical tiles. Before the start of the game, all 144 tiles are laid out, face up, in the middle of the table, and each player is given 13 tiles. Play starts with the player to the right of the dealer and the tiles are taken from the middle of the table. The player must then build a legal hand of 14 tiles from the tiles they take from the middle of the table and the tiles they already hold. The player then takes the turn of discarding a tile which another player may claim to complete a set with. The game is won when a particular player completes a legal hand.
