Barbados, a Caribbean Sea island country, is more than just the birthplace of Rihanna. Part of the Lesser Antilles, it is the easternmost of the Caribbean islands. Once a colony of Spain and the UK, Barbados acquired its status as an independent state in 1966. It is also a Commonwealth state where Elizabeth II is the queen. However, there are plans to remove her as Barbados' head of state and for the country to transform itself into a republic by 2021.
Over 28,000 people are living in Barbados, most of whom are descendants of Africans. Bridgetown is the capital city, and English is the official language.
