Dotted just 50 miles from Florida's eastern coast, the Bahamas archipelago comprises more than 700 coral islands offering sun-drenched sands, crystal clear waters, and pure escapism.
Its capital, and largest city, is Nassau. With a population of 275,000, it makes up 70% of the entire population of the Bahamas and dwarves every other town or city in the country, with the next biggest conurbation of Freeport being home to 47,000 people.
The Bahamas actually gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1973, although Queen Elizabeth II still serves as its Queen. After the US and Canada, it is the next most prosperous country in the Americas.
